FIFA selects TRACAB
FIFA has selected advanced tracking technology developed by TRACAB to monitor, record and analyse every run, pass, shot and save at the Confederations Cup, currently under way in South Africa, and next year’s FIFA World Cup.
It is the first time that world football’s governing body has deployed a tracking system at its major tournaments and is an indication of the growing importance of data and data rights around football. The Confederations Cup - which features the champions of each FIFA Confederation plus World Champions Italy - is a dress-rehearsal for next year’s World Cup.
The 3D tracking data delivered by TRACAB - which is processed and delivered in real-time - is used in a variety of ways. It provides broadcasters with on-screen data graphics as well as sophisticated analysis tools which allows critical incidents to be replayed and viewed from any angle. The system also provides the most comprehensive data output for print and online media as well as coaches, who use it to monitor the performances of individual players in minute detail.
In addition, the data provides the creative basis for sponsorship initiatives around the tournament.
TRACAB uses technology developed in conjunction with Swedish aerospace and de-fence giant Saab, to track every movement on a football pitch in 3D from two multi-camera sensors located in the grandstand. The 3D capability makes it uniquely accurate and reliable.
The system, which is continually improved and updated, has been used in over 1,500 live games globally. In partnership with Delta Tre, TRACAB covered all matches at UEFA’s Euro 2008 tournament in Switzerland and Austria and has completed three seasons of coverage of every UEFA Champions League game.
TRACAB also has contracts with many domestic football leagues including those in Swe-den, Russia, Austria and Hungary.
In Sweden, fans are able to watch sophisticated real-time representation of games online at TRACAB’s Virtual Arena, hosted on the website of a leading newspaper and now sponsored as The Ricoh Arena.
TRACAB technology was selected by FIFA after an extensive exercise to benchmark a number of available systems.
TRACAB CEO Johan Apel commented: “The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of world football and we are delighted have been selected for this project”
“The World Cup represents the best football has to offer and the TRACAB provides a best-of-breed system which adds an additional dimension to the way that the tournament is covered and enjoyed by fans around the world, new creative opportunities for sponsors and significant new revenue streams for football.”
